I've read the book twice. As a piece of literature this book is an easy and enjoyable read. It's laid out well and easy to understand. It's a page turner. Tom Grant and Matthew Richer wrote this like a detective novel. Tom could've veered in other speculative directions (e.g., Heavier than Heaven garbage), but he sticks to the facts in a direct and unambiguous manner.
As a chronology, this book makes clear in a logical fashion the events leading up to and after Kurt Cobain's murder. Police reports, published magazine articles, and other source documents paint accurate pictures of events pertaining to Kurt's murder. There are a lot of magazine articles quoting Kurt's friends and associates that say he was not suicidal. Again, this information is not just Tom Grant's opinion, but documented information. The book is filled with these facts. Indisputable facts, in my opinion, that clearly state that Kurt was not suicidal.
Ignoring Courtney Love's sociopathic behavior, the indisputable forensic evidence cannot be dismissed Kurt took too much heroin to have operated the shotgun (let alone put his kit away, neatly roll down his sleeves, load the shotgun, and position himself on the floor). The spent shotgun shell was on the left rather than on the right. There are no arguments that can dismiss these forensic facts and the only logical conclusion is that Kurt Cobain did not commit suicide.
If you have any doubts about Kurt Cobain's murder, you should read this book. As Tom Grant has mentioned (more than once), if anyone can come up with a plausible theory that spells out the reasons why the forensic evidence is evidence of a suicide, please provide your theory and back up to Tom. It's been over 22 years since Kurt's murder and no one has come up with a rebuttal to this challenge yet.
To anyone wondering if there is anything new in this book, let me reassure them with a resounding "Yes!" As others have noted, this book contains information that I've not seen in any other of the books written on this tragic topic. Mr. Grant and his co-author present the case matter-of-factly, in an easy flowing format that pulls you in and compels you to keep reading. They tell you the facts as Mr. Grant experienced them and then ask, what do you think? Is it realistic that someone who was supposedly so suicidal was making future plans with multiple persons? Do the explanations offered by the Seattle Police stand up to logic? Would a person who was supposed to be utterly desperate to find their suicidal spouse deliberately mislead the investigator she hired to find him? Etc.
To those who think this case is all just another "conspiracy theory" followed and perpetuated by fanatics, don't you find it strange that 22 years after the fact, there's still no clear explanation of Cobain's last days? Some say he was visibly suicidal and heavily whacked out on heroin. Others say he was under pressure but generally ok, and was clean. No one seems to agree on where he was and who he was with in his final days and hours. Doesn't that strike you as "off?" Isn't it at least plausible that this confusion is intentional?
Think of other famous people who died tragically young John Belushi, John Lennon, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and others. We know exactly who they were with and what they were doing in their final days and hours. There's no confusion, no discrepancies. But with Cobain, take your pick as to what you want to believe. This despite that fact that at least two people are known to have been in his house while he was supposedly shooting himself in the greenhouse. Yet, the Seattle Police didn't see it worthy to thoroughly investigate what those people saw, heard and knew.
Look at the evidence about the case that has been presented. In addition to what Mr. Grant and others have pointed out, go see for yourself. It's not in this book, but you can go to the Seattle Police's website and see the reports and pictures of the scene for yourself. Look at the recently released picture of Cobain's left hand. This hand was supposed to have been clutching a shotgun barrel inches away from a shotgun blast to the face. Yet, there's not a speck of blood on it. Not. A. Speck. That doesn't seem strange to you? Do you know how that could be? There are two ways 1) the hand was actually nowhere near Cobain's face when the gun was discharged, meaning someone else pulled the trigger, or 2) Cobain's heart was stopped at the time the shotgun was discharged--no heartbeat means no blood pressure which means none or very little blood splatter.
For many years I took this case to be what we were all told it was a tragic suicide by someone who couldn't handle the fame thrust upon him. It was only in recent years that I came across Mr. Grant's webpage ([...]) and took a look at his evidence. I have to say, it is compelling, well-thought out, and it changed my mind. I am convinced that Kurt Cobain did not kill himself and this case needs to be reopened. I think if you approach the evidence with an open mind, you will be convinced too.
I first entertained the idea that Kurt Cobain may have murdered after watching the documentary "Kurt and Courtney" around the time it was first released on video. While I, like most teenagers in the 90's, was a fan of Nirvana, I became even more interested and somewhat enamored with Kurt Cobain, the man, after reading Journals. I later read Charles Cross's biography on Kurt Heavier Than Heaven. I have since read every book about Kurt, watched every movie or video about him and bought every album that I can. Yet this is the only book or publication, other than Soaked in Bleach, that I find to be impartial and credible. As a psych major who has worked in the field of mental health and also as a singer songwriter influenced by Nirvana, I have never understood why Courtney Love and her band, Hole, were ever popular other than the obvious association with Kurt. Also, I have thought Courtney was a sociopath or psychopath and compulsive liar who lacks any true musical or lyrical talent. It has always frustrated me that she gets away with so much bad behavior and continues to. I feel like this book brings a lot of truths to light. I found the book so interesting that I read it in less than 2 days. How I wish Kurt could've had a chance to live his life the way he was hoping - without fame, fortune and Courtney Love. I believe in Karma and I also believe that the truth always prevails eventually. Thank you to Tom Grant for having the gumption to fight the good fight in order to help bring the truth to light.
